The best meal delivery service for families is Blue Apron with high-quality meal kits at a fair price per serving, especially when purchased in bulk, and plenty of options for youngsters each week. For families with special diets to consider or picky eaters around the table, there are other excellent options for meal kits and prepared meal delivery that might be a better fit.

Meal delivery could be your secret to a less stressful start to school season.

Figuring out what to make for dinner is a challenge for any family on any day, but that's especially true during the back-to-school hustle. A kid-friendly meal delivery service can help with planning shopping cooking and serving healthy hot meals to power your crew through even the busiest of weeks.

To help your family prepare for the busy start to fall, I've tested dozens of food subscription services including classic meal kits, fully prepared meal services, grocery delivery services and even snack box subscriptions. I used that research and countless hours of testing literally hundreds of recipes to devise this list of the best meal delivery services for families in 2024.

If you're wondering if meal kits are still an expensive splurge they're not we did the math and certain meal kits end up being roughly the same cost, sometimes cheaper, than buying the groceries yourself.

Best meal delivery services for families

Best meal kits for families

Pros

  • High-quality meals and interesting recipes
  • Only $8 per serving when you choose a large plan
  • Standard menu includes steak and seafood
  • Plenty of kid-friendly meals per week

Cons

  • Not as many kid-friendly options per week as some services
  • Fewer substitutions allowed

Blue Apron is my favorite meal delivery subscription overall, and with some of the cheapest bulk pricing of any meal kit service, it gets even better for families.

Blue Apron’s standard menu includes meal kits featuring steak, salmon and shrimp without added costs, whereas most other meal kit services charge for steak and seafood. The original meal kit service sports plenty of kid-friendly meals including cheeseburgers with potato wedges, crispy panko chicken thighs and pork belly ramen noodles. Blue Apron recipes are also some of the tastiest we tried with interesting ingredients, balanced flavors and loads of healthy options.

Some services such as Home Chef and HelloFresh may have more options per week -- don't worry we have another pick for families with picky eaters -- the quality of food and lower price for a large meal plan ($8 per meal for a 6-serving plan) pushes Blue Apron over the edge as the best meal kit for families in 2024.

Here's my full review of Blue Apron.

Best for families with picky eaters

Pros

  • More than 100 recipe options per week
  • Allows for customization for picky eaters
  • Meals are quick and easy to make

Cons

  • No significant discount for ordering a larger plan
  • Some recipes are bland and boring

HelloFresh stands out as the best meal kit service for families with picky eaters. Not only are the meals easy and quick with some taking less than 25 minutes to prepare but HelloFresh has a sprawling menu of over 100 recipes and add-ons per week. What's more, those recipes can be tailored to your specific tastes, swapping in chicken for fish or doubling the protein if you have a team of athletes to feed.

Many of HelloFresh’s meals are kid-friendly with options like chicken sausage spaghetti bolognese, Tex-Mex pork meatloaves and crispy parmesan chicken. There are also plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, in case you're trying to stick to meatless Monday or transitioning to a diet with more plant-based food.

HelloFresh also has a full market of add-ons including breakfast items snacks and desserts so you can round out your order and save yourself time grocery shopping in person or online. Most meal plans clock in at $10 per serving but unlike Blue Apron, there isn’t much of a discount for ordering a larger plan.

Best meal kits for fast dinners

Pros

  • Some recipes take as little as 15 minutes
  • Oven-ready meals require very little prep
  • Tons of kid-friendly meal kits

Cons

  • Cost doesn't go down much when you order more servings
  • Recipes can be hit or miss
  • A lot of plastic used in packaging

Home Chef has a sprawling menu of nearly three dozen recipes every week. Many of the service's wholesome meals can be ready in under 20 minutes, with some finished as quickly as 15. There is an entire category of oven-ready meals that need only to be assembled and popped in the oven. On a busy school and work night, having a full dinner on the table with such little effort can make all the difference.

We tested Home Chef three times including several of the oven-ready meals. While not every recipe was a winner, the bulk were good and the speed at which they can be made helps boost Home Chef onto our list of best meal delivery for families.

Home Chef operates much like other meal kit services with a range of plans, most of which clock it at around $10 per serving. You can also make swaps and customizations to meals, making these speedy meal kit services even more family-friendly.

Home Chef even has fully prepared meals (no cooking, just heating) available to add to your order.

Best for prepared meals

Pros

  • The best plant-based meal delivery we've tried
  • Family-style meals are just $5 a serving
  • Excellent use of plant-based proteins like jackfruit and lentils

Cons

  • Some meals we tried lacked spice
  • Family-style meal options are limited

Mosaic Foods is a fully vegetarian prepared meal delivery service (no cooking required!) -- but trust me, you won't miss the meat. Mosaic delivers plant-based meals in single servings or affordable family-style portions, the latter being a perfect option to feed a crowd with healthy food without breaking the bank.

Mosaic's larger family meals are easily frozen to be thawed out for a quick dinner and include family-friendly options broccoli and cheddar mac, shepherd's pie and eggplant moussaka. There are roughly 10 family meals to choose from and the recipes don't change much from week-to-week. Each one costs $20 and serves four or five, keeping the per-serving cost to about five bucks.

Single-serving meals are mostly $10 or more but the options are also more plentiful. The healthy prepared meal service offers more than 100 options from smoothies (sourced from Splendid Spoon) to soups, rice bowls, noodle dishes and flatbread pizzas. You can tack on any amount of single meals with your family meals for a stray lunch here or there but I recommend sticking to family-style dishes to keep your family fed with healthy plant-based food for not a lot of dough.

Best prepared vegan meals

Pros

  • Pasta and rice family-sized meals are an excellent value
  • Food is all made with healthy, plant-based ingredients
  • Well over 100 meal options to choose from

Cons

  • Single-serve meals are expensive to feed a crowd
  • Some of the soups and smoothies are just OK

If your family digs pasta and rice but you don't love cooking it, stock the freezer with Daily Harvest’s excellent pre-made pasta and rice dishes. They're affordable, completely gluten-free -- including the pasta -- and crafted with superfoods like kale, white beans and lentils.

Daily Harvest rice and pasta meals cost $9.79 per bag. Each is good for two servings but I found them to be more like three. While the recipes are all 100% vegan, you can always add protein yourself such as fish or grilled chicken to round out the meal.

Daily Harvest also offers single-serve smoothies bowls soups and other recipes but these will cost you more like $9 to $12 per meal which might not be the most economical way to feed a large group. Daily Harvest meals come frozen and ready to thaw and eat or save in the freezer for a busy evening.

Best grocery delivery for families

Pros

  • You can make meal kits or freestyle with the ingredients
  • Hundreds of healthy grocery items to choose from
  • Affordableand convenient

Cons

  • Not a full substitution for grocery shopping
  • Items aren't always in stock

If you like the idea of meal kits but don't want to commit to formal recipes every week Hungryroot is the service to pick this hybrid meal kit and grocery delivery subscription sends a weekly supply of meats vegetables cheeses snacks and other items with suggested meal kits to be spun into quick lunches or dinners.

The beauty of Hungryroot is anything you get in your Hungryroot order can be used outside of the meal kits like whole grain wraps, pre-made chicken breast and healthy salad kits. There are also easy breakfast meals like sous vide egg bits and oat bowls to add to your order.

Hungryroot will curate a list of suggested groceries for you each week but you can always add or remove items that don't work for your week ahead. Hungryroot is affordable too with plans starting at $65 per week. I did the math to see how much Hungryroot costs versus grocery shopping for the same items yourself. The difference was just a few bucks per week but Hungryroot will save you time and energy normally spent on meal planning and grocery shopping -- a major boon for any family.

Hungryroot has some fresh meat and produce but the options are limited so you may need to make a quick trip to the market to get certain items.

How we test the best meal delivery services for families

steak meal kit ingredients

If you opt for a cheaper meal kit service, you might not get as many steak and seafood options.

David Watsky/CNET

All the meal delivery services may look delicious in their website glamour shots, but that's not enough to convince me.

To settle on this list of the best meal delivery services I tried as many as I could get my hands on, noting everything about them from freshness and flavor to ordering, packaging and delivery.

Testing meal kits for families means rolling up my sleeves and cooking at least one week's worth of meals from each service, often more. How each meal kit tastes, how easy it was to prepare and the portion sizes are all considered.

A big factor in determining the best meal delivery for families is the number of kid-friendly meals offered each week. Every family’s diet is different, but I looked for classic family-friendly dishes such as pasta, simple chicken recipes and those without a ton of hot spice or bold flavors.

I also evaluate the website and how easy it is to navigate along with determining how easy it is to pause, cancel or change your order at any given time. To learn more, I have an in-depth look at how we test meal kits at CNET.

Factors to consider when choosing a meal delivery service for your family

Meal kit versus prepared meals

home chef meal kits

Prepared meals are ready to heat and eat.

Home Chef

The two basic types of meal delivery services are meal kits where you cook the food yourself with ingredients provided in one simple package there are also prepared meal delivery services that send ready-to-heat and-eat meals with no cooking involved.

Most prepared meal delivery services make food that’s easy to freeze so you won’t have to eat them right away. Meal kits on the other hand should be cooked within the week or leafy greens and other fresh ingredients may turn on you.

Buying individually prepared meals for the family might sound easy, but it would also be expensive since prepared single-serve meals typically start at $12 and go up from there. On balance, meal kits are the more budget-friendly option with some services starting at $6 a serving but most ranging between $8 and $10.

Tastes and preferences

Some meal kit and prepared meal services take a more-is-more approach with cuisine types and total recipes, which might be helpful for families with picky eaters.

All the services on this list offer a slew of kid-friendly meals In their weekly menu but some have more options and more ways to tailor meal kits to suit picky eaters. HelloFresh has the most menu options of any service we tried so if your crew has particular tastes, you may want to opt for that one.

Cost and value

EveryPlate is my favorite budget meal kit. The food is simple, delicious and easy to prepare.

If you are planning to use a meal delivery service as a long-term fix for feeding the family, consider the overall cost before signing up. Plans start at around $5 or $6 per serving, but some meal kit services cost upwards of $15 which may be a budget buster for a family of four or five. Most services also charge a shipping fee of around $10 per box.

Blue Apron is right In the Sweet Spot with family plans starting at 8 bucks a serving and a menu of high-quality recipes to please both kids and adults. EveryPlate is the cheapest meal kit at $6 per serving. For prepared meals, Daily Harvest and Mosaic Foods (both plant-based) have family meals that net out to around $5 a serving.

Add-ons and extras

Hungryroot and HelloFresh are the best picks if you're looking for a market of add-ons to tack on to a weekly order.

Hungryroot

Meal kit service can help with your weekly grocery shopping but may not be a full replacement for a family of four or five. Services such as HelloFresh and Hungryroot have loads of extras and add-ons including snacks desserts pantry items and even frozen meals to supplement your meal kits

Other meal delivery services we've tested

  • Sunbasket: This service has high-end meal kits, but the bloated cost keeps it off our list.
  • Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon: This is another meal kit service aimed at foodies. While the quality is high, the prices are too.
  • BistroMD: These meals are intended to promote weight loss, but the cost is high, and the flavors aren't good enough to justify the price.
  • Splendid Spoon: If you want premade smoothies, this is a good service to try, but be prepared to pay about $10 for each one.
  • Dinnerly: This meal kit service is one of the cheapest, but the recipes were inconsistent.
  • Territory Foods: The food was some of the best I tried, and I found the recipes diverse and interesting. Ultimately the cost -- $11 to $17 per meal -- kept it off the list.
  • Sakara Life: This fresh food service was tasty and good for a cleanse, but it's also one of the most expensive meal subscriptions we tried.
  • Trifecta Nutrition: Trifecta's vegan meals are healthy and tasty but also expensive.
  • Snap Kitchen: Snap Kitchen has solid prepared meals, mostly under 450 calories. The portions were a bit small, and some meals were underwhelming.
  • FlexPro Meals: These frozen keto meals were some of the worst I tried.
  • Nutrisystem: Although it's affordable, I disliked most of the meals I tried from this frozen meal subscription.
  • Rootberry: This vegan meal delivery service is reliable but the food is not to the level of others on our list.
  • Veestro: These vegan-prepared meals are tasty but not the most kid-friendly of the bunch we tested.
